‘you are here’ is a performative mapping project in which fragments of 14th Street will be captured at a 1:1 scale through a slow, laborious working methods. It will be performed at Art in Odd Places: CARE, on 14th Street, New York City, between 18-20 October 2024.

Working with old, abandoned maps - which hold personal memories and histories, and which have been combined into one piece - the artist will incorporate seemingly insignificant features and textures from the ground surface, as well as fragments of passing conversation, rain, dust and the surface of the street.

From a distance, the artist may look as if she is way-finding, fieldworking, or lost. Over three days, working slowly along the length of 14th Street, she will produce an altered map which foregrounds human experience of urban time and space.  Passers-by will be invited to stop and add their own mapping and drawing.

‘you are here’ presents a different way of navigating and knowing the world; one which is direct and fragmentary, rather abstract and continuous. It positions mapping and knowing as a care-full engagement with the world.
